Residual stress laboratory
Residual stresses are a series of forces that modify the stability of a component by changing the resistance to fatigue and to fracture. Residual stresses can be found in plastic materials, composite materials or polymeric ones.
SINT Technology is an Italian Company that provides analysis and diagnostic services applied to residual stresses, vibration, noise, gas emissions and the thermodynamic performance of machinery.
As a specialized residual stress laboratory, SINT Technology has developed a specific system for measuring residual stress via the hole drilling method: it is called MTS3000 – Restan which is fully compliant to ASTM E837-13 standard.
MTS3000 – Restan is able to measure residual stresses into metals and other kinds of materials, with standard drilling speed of about 400,000 rpm: this avoids introducing any other residual stress into the material during the test process. Also plastic, composite and other kinds of materials can be tested, both in the lab and on site.
For residual stress measurements by hole drilling method, SINT Technology is also accredited test lab, in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025.
RESIDUAL STRESS LABORATORY: LABORATORY TESTS
Inside our residual stress laboratory we can provide measurement tests on different samples provided by the customers. Some typical application fields of residual stress are aerospace, railway and automotive industry, oil and gas (compressor and turbine parts), production control (quality control of the surface) and different parts coming from forging or foundry process, before and after machining and heat treatment process.

RESIDUAL STRESS LABORATORY FEATURES: A COMPLETE MEASUREMENT CHAIN
The MTS3000 – Restan is an advanced and accurate system to measure residual stress by the hole drilling method. The hole-drilling strain-gage method has been standardized by the ASTM E 837 “Standard Test Method for Determining Residual Stresses by the Hole-Drilling Strain-Gage Method”.
Moreover, SINT Technology developed the EVAL analysis software to process all acquired data during the test. Also the SINT EVAL software is fully compliant to the ASTM E837-13a standard for hole drilling measurements.
So, the complete chain of the system include:
- Mechanical device
- Electronic device
- Personal Computer
- Digital strain gage amplifier
- Setup and calculation software (RSM and EVAL)
