Diagnostics in the field of cultural heritage requires specific and sophisticated instruments developed to analyze in depth the state of conservation of materials.
In the last years, several Cultural Heritage diagnostics tools have been developed by specialized companies, together with research institutes and Universities: SINT Technology, with its DRMS Cordless system, is one of them.
The DRMS (Drilling Resistance Measurement System) is designed to measure the drilling resistance of stone materials like marbles or other natural stones and construction materials like mortars and bricks.
Diagnostics and preservation of cultural heritage are truly important to determine the state of conservation of historical monuments and buildings and for they enhancement: the DRMS Cordless is frequently used to evaluate the resistance of construction materials in Cultural heritage, especially before and after materials treatments.
The system, in fact, allows both laboratory tests and on site measurements: Cultural Heritage diagnostics is a specific on site field of application. The portability and light weight (approx. 5 kg.) of DRMS makes it possible to carry out measurements in different directions and also in hard-access zones.

CULTURAL HERITAGE DIAGNOSTICS: HOW DRMS-CORDLESS IS USED
In detail, the diagnostics of cultural heritage includes several tasks such as the evaluation of the deterioration of monuments and art-historical environments; the microclimatic monitoring of museums, libraries, archives; the diagnosis and assessment of art authentication; the assessment of the suitability of the products used for the restoration, preservation and maintenance of cultural heritage.
The DRMS Cordless is used in particular to verify the effectiveness of consolidation interventions done by injecting mortars or resin into materials and for detecting the state of their deterioration.
How does it work?
The DRMS can detect fluctuations in the drilling resistance with depth around the mean value. The test allows to find the cause of these fluctuations: they can be attributed to non-homogeneities in the material, such as different sedimentation layers, different grain size and resistance, micro and macro cracks etc.
By drilling the materials with special diamond type drilling bits, the system can measure continuously:
1. Penetration force
2. Actual drill position
3. Rotational speed
4. Penetration rate
Both rotational speed and feed rate are kept constant during operation, and can be continuously regulated between minimum and maximum values.
In a Cultural Heritage diagnostics contest, the drilling resistance measurement system can perform simple but precise drilling resistance measurements, giving accurate evaluation of the rock toughness.
DRMS CORDLESS MAIN FEATURES
The speed of rotation is established by the operator prior to drilling; the range is from 20 to 1000 rpm
Speed is kept constant during drilling
Penetration speed is set by the operator before drilling; the range is from 1 to 80 mm/min
Travel span from 0 to 50 mm.
Diamond type drilling bits: size range from 3 to 10 mm in diameter
Cultural heritage diagnostics with DRMS Cordless
Drilling Resistance tests with DRMS Cordless have been realized at Florence Dome and Santa Croce; Pending Tower (Pisa); English cemetery (Florence); Parthenon (Athens); Trondheim Cathedral and more.
